Last night I was invited to visit the set of the new series Hart of Dixie, where Rachel Bilson and costume designer Meredith Markworth Pollack hosted an informal conversation about style.
Rachel stars as a displaced New Yorker marooned in BlueBell, Alabama. Her character arrives with an enviable suitcase full of Dries Van Noten, Valentino, and Chloe pieces. Readers, I had such fun browsing a wardrobe-department rack packed with size-zero Helmut Lang skirts! Not to mention all the Chanel pieces and tiny Tory Burch shoes… mon dieu!
For me, this costume designer is a rising star in her own right. I asked how she got her start, and she told me it was by assisting Eric Daman on the first two seasons of Gossip Girl. (!) Needless to say, she’s thrilled with this new opportunity and loves working with Rachel, whose connections in the fashion business enable them to get samples from designers for free.
Being a stylist also makes you a savvy shopper. Meredith explained that her wardrobe budget is limited, so she can’t just shop at Barney’s the way Rachel’s character (or Rachel herself) would. Instead, she hits Loehmann’s, designer outlets, and TheOutnet to score killer items for less.
Oh, and if you want to see Meredith’s work in action, catch Hart of Dixie starting Monday, September 26 on the CW.
